If you own a home on the North Carolina coast, the state will help pay for your next roof. Most homeowners have no idea this exists.

It’s called the NC Strengthen Your Roof grant, and it puts real money toward replacing your roof with a stronger, storm-rated one. No income limits. No catch buried in the fine print. You just have to know it’s there and apply before the money runs out.

Here’s how it works, who qualifies, and how to claim it.

What Is the NC Strengthen Your Roof Grant?

The NC Strengthen Your Roof grant is a program from the North Carolina Insurance Underwriting Association. It pays coastal homeowners to upgrade to an IBHS Fortified roof. [1][2]

A Fortified roof is built to a higher standard than code. It’s engineered to hold up against the high winds, heavy rain, and hurricanes we get on this coast. The state wants more of these roofs on more homes, so it helps cover the cost. [2][6]

You stay in your home. You don’t wait for storm damage. You just decide to put a better roof on your house, and the grant helps you pay for it. [1]

How Much Money Can You Get?

There are two versions of the grant, and which one you qualify for depends on where your home sits.

  • Up to $6,000 if your home is in the mainland coastal counties. This is the Strengthen Your Coastal Roof program. [2]
  • Up to $10,000 if your home is on the Outer Banks or the barrier islands, where the wind exposure is highest. [1]

To put that in perspective, a Fortified roof usually costs only a little more than a standard roof, often around $1,200 to $3,200 more. The grant tends to cover that whole difference, and then some. [6]

Do You Qualify for the Strengthen Your Roof Grant?

You’re likely eligible if all of these are true:

  • Your home is in one of North Carolina’s coastal counties. That includes Pender, New Hanover, Onslow, Brunswick, Carteret, Craven, Dare, and more. [4]
  • You carry a current NCIUA insurance policy. [1]
  • You’re willing to upgrade to the Fortified roof standard. [1]
  • Your home is a single-family house or a duplex, three stories or fewer. [1]

One thing people love about this program: there are no income limits. It’s open to every homeowner who meets the location and policy requirements. [4]

There’s one important detail. The Strengthen Your Roof grant is for homeowners choosing to replace their roof on purpose, not for filing a storm-damage claim. If a storm just damaged your roof, that’s a different path, and we can walk you through that one too. [1][3]

The Other Reason a Fortified Roof Pays You Back

The grant lowers what you spend today. Your insurance does the rest.

A Fortified roof can cut the wind portion of your coastal insurance premium by roughly 15% to 25%. On a coastal policy, that can mean hundreds to well over a thousand dollars saved every single year. [5]

Stack that up over the life of the roof and the savings can pass $13,000, sometimes far more. That often beats the entire cost of the roof. The grant and the insurance discount are separate benefits, so you get both. [5]

And these roofs hold up. NC State University looked at claims after Hurricanes Matthew, Florence, Dorian, and Isaias. Homes with a Fortified roof filed about a third fewer claims, and when they were damaged, the damage was around 22% less severe. [6][7]

How to Claim Your Strengthen Your Roof Grant

The process has a few steps, and a couple of them trip people up. Here’s the short version. [8]

  1. Check your eligibility on the program website using your NCIUA policy number.
  2. Apply online and upload four photos of your home from the ground to the roof.
  3. Wait for approval. This part matters, because starting your roof before you’re approved can disqualify you.
  4. Once you’re approved, you pick your contractor from the program dashboard.
  5. A Fortified evaluator inspects the work to certify it meets the standard.
  6. After the roof is done and certified, you send in your paperwork and the state sends you the grant money.

That fourth step is where we come in. You choose your roofer, and you want one who’s actually Fortified certified. [8]

Why Homeowners Pick Halo for Their Fortified Roof

Plenty of companies can install a roof. Far fewer are Fortified certified and can do a grant-approved Fortified roof the right way.

Halo Roofing and Renovations is Fortified certified. We do these roofs. We know the standard, we know the paperwork, and we know how to get the job certified so your grant actually pays out.

We treat your home like it’s our own. That means we tell you straight whether you qualify, we help you understand the steps, and we don’t leave you guessing on the parts that confuse everyone else.

One Thing You Shouldn’t Wait On

The grant money is first come, first served. When the fund for a cycle runs out, it’s gone until the next round. [1][2]

The current cycle also has an installation deadline, so the homeowners who move early are the ones who get funded. If you’ve been thinking your roof is getting close, this is the year to look into it. [2]
