Halo was excellent to work with. They took care of meeting my insurance company at my home. They started and finished the job promptly. Their guys were great and cleaned up the site fantastic. At the end of the day, you couldn’t even tell they had been there. Great Job! Ricky and Justin were great to work with! They did everything they said they would do! I would highly recommend this company. Service was Great! If you need a roof call Halo Roofing. You will truly pleased with their work!!!
Response from the owner: Thank you Pete for the kind words. It was a pleasure and enjoyed catching up and spending a little time reminiscing
Very professional from initial contact to completed work. Quality of work, Ighly recommend.
Response from the owner: Thank you Jerry! We appreciate your kind review.
Competitive pricing, fast and efficient. I would definitely b recommend this company
Response from the owner: Thank you for the kind words and thank you for choosing us
Had a problem with a ridge vent and Justin was able to come and get the matter sorted for me. Very professional, knowledgeable, and friendly.
Response from the owner: Thank you Thomas for the kind words. It was our pleasure
Happy to leave a 5-star review - HALO Roofing made my roof replacement incredibly easy!I had not been pleased with other (4) estimates I acquired prior to meeting Justin at my home on May 30, 2024. He performed a quick inspection and asked if I had any specific concerns or questions about the process of a full roof replacement. He delivered an accurate estimate in prompt timing and had me on the schedule for installation almost immediately. Not long after I had brand-new roof, but EXACT match to my previous roof pattern, with a 50 year warranty! I was also very impressed with flat (commercial grade) roofing and new 1" insulation board. This upgrade has significantly helped with HVAC costs in the hot summer months.During installation Justin was present and receptive of my concerns about rotted decking and my busted attic fans. I used the 2-4x8 sheets of plywood provided with the roof replacement some additional boards in other problem areas. The crew did a very impressive job protecting my HVAC units and hunted the grounds for nails/scraps upon their completion. (I don't mind a little mess after a large job like this, after all - it's a HUGE project so there's some bits and pieces to be expected - I give these guys ALOT of credit for their clean-up!)From start to finish, top notch performance from HALO Roofing! When I need another roof, they will without a doubt have my business.
Response from the owner: Thank you Matthew for the kind words We try to go above and beyond for our customers and-your kind words tells me we are on the right course. If ever needed we are just a call away. Many Thanks for choosing Halo Roofing
They are the best. The church roof is awesome. Thank you so very much. We are very grateful.
Response from the owner: Thank You. It was our pleasure. If you ever need us we’re just a call away
The go to guys for your roofing needs and more.
Response from the owner: THANKS ATLAS
They made getting our roof replaced so easy. It was a great experience from start to finish, and I felt confident in everything that was done.
Reasonable pricing and good work.

FAQ: We’ve Got Answers

What Is a Fortified Roof, and How Does It Differ From a Standard Roofing System?

A Fortified Roof is a specially designed roofing system engineered to provide enhanced protection against extreme weather conditions like hurricanes, high winds, and heavy rain.

It’s not just a stronger roof—it’s a comprehensive system that meets rigorous standards set by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), ensuring your home is better equipped to withstand nature’s toughest challenges.

Let’s break down what makes a Fortified Roof unique and how it stands apart from a standard roofing system.

How Is a Fortified Roof Different From a Standard Roof?

Standard roofing systems are built to meet basic building codes, which focus on protecting homes under normal weather conditions. While they can handle everyday rain and wind, they often fail when exposed to severe storms or hurricanes.

A Fortified Roof, on the other hand, goes beyond the minimum requirements to provide:

  1. A Sealed Roof Deck
One of the key features of a Fortified Roof is a sealed roof deck.

This involves applying a special adhesive or waterproof barrier over the entire roof deck before installing shingles.

  • Why It Matters: In standard roofs, water can seep into your home if shingles are blown away during a storm. A sealed roof deck prevents water intrusion, protecting your interior from leaks and damage even if the outer layer is compromised.
  1. Stronger Fastening Systems
Fortified Roofs use enhanced fasteners like ring-shank nails instead of the traditional smooth nails used in standard roofs.

These fasteners provide a more secure hold, keeping shingles and roof decking in place during high winds.

  • Why It Matters: High winds are a leading cause of roof damage during storms. A stronger fastening system reduces the risk of shingles or roof sections being blown off.
  1. Enhanced Edge Protection
The edges of a roof are especially vulnerable during storms. Fortified Roofs include reinforced edge materials to prevent uplift and keep the roof securely attached.
  • Why It Matters: Protecting the edges prevents damage from spreading, maintaining the roof’s structural integrity even in extreme weather.
  1. Wind-Resistant Shingles
Fortified Roofs often feature shingles designed to withstand higher wind speeds than standard materials.

These shingles are tested for durability and flexibility under extreme conditions.

  • Why It Matters: Standard shingles can peel or crack under hurricane-force winds, leaving your home exposed. Wind-resistant shingles stay in place, protecting your roof and interior.
  1. Third-Party Certification
Every Fortified Roof is inspected and certified by IBHS, ensuring it meets their strict standards for storm resistance.

This certification provides peace of mind that your roof is ready for severe weather.

  • Why It Matters: Certification guarantees that your roof has been built to the highest standards of durability and safety.

Why Choose a Fortified Roof?

  1. Protection Against Extreme Weather
North Carolina is no stranger to hurricanes, high winds, and heavy rain.

A Fortified Roof provides unmatched protection, reducing the risk of storm damage and safeguarding your home’s structure.

  1. Long-Term Cost Savings
While a Fortified Roof requires a higher upfront investment, it can save you money in the long run by:
  • Preventing costly repairs caused by storm damage.
  • Reducing maintenance needs.
  • Extending the lifespan of your roof.
  1. Insurance Benefits
Many insurance providers offer premium discounts for homes with Fortified Roofs, recognizing the reduced risk of damage.

Over time, these savings can offset the cost of installation.

  1. Increased Property Value
A Fortified Roof enhances your home’s curb appeal and market value.

Buyers are willing to pay more for a home that offers superior storm protection, making it a valuable selling point.

  1. Peace of Mind
Knowing your roof is certified to withstand severe weather provides a level of confidence and security that standard roofs simply can’t match.

How Can a Fortified Roof Protect My Home During Extreme Weather Like Hurricanes or High Winds?

A Fortified Roof is your home’s best defense against extreme weather.

Designed to withstand hurricanes, high winds, and heavy rain, this advanced roofing system protects your home from structural damage, water intrusion, and the costly repairs that often follow severe storms.

Unlike standard roofs, Fortified Roofs are engineered to meet rigorous standards set by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), ensuring your roof stays intact when the weather gets tough.

Here’s how a Fortified Roof offers superior protection during extreme weather events:

  1. Sealed Roof Deck: Stopping Water Intrusion Before It Starts
One of the most critical features of a Fortified Roof is the sealed roof deck.

This involves covering the entire roof deck with a waterproof barrier, such as an adhesive underlayment or specialized tape, to create a tight seal beneath the shingles.

  • Why It Matters:
In a standard roof, if shingles are torn off by strong winds, water can seep into the home, causing interior damage and mold growth. A sealed roof deck prevents water from penetrating your home, even if the outer layer of shingles is compromised.
  • The Result:
Your home remains dry and protected, no matter how much rain or wind the storm brings.
  1. Reinforced Edges: Keeping the Roof Secured
The edges of your roof are the most vulnerable during high winds.

Fortified Roofs address this weakness with reinforced edge systems, using stronger materials and secure fasteners to ensure the edges stay in place.

  • Why It Matters:
High winds can create uplift at the edges of a roof, pulling shingles and decking away from the home. By reinforcing these areas, a Fortified Roof prevents damage from starting and spreading.
  • The Result:
Your roof stays firmly attached to your home, reducing the risk of large-scale damage.
  1. Wind-Resistant Fastening: A Roof That Stays Put
Fortified Roofs use advanced fastening systems, such as ring-shank nails or hurricane clips, to secure shingles and decking more effectively than standard smooth nails.
  • Why It Matters:
During hurricanes or strong storms, standard nails can pull loose, allowing shingles or entire sections of the roof to blow away. Fortified Roof fasteners are designed to hold tight, even under extreme wind pressures.
  • The Result:
Your roof withstands winds up to 130 mph, protecting your home’s structure and interior.
  1. Superior Shingles and Materials: Built for Durability
A Fortified Roof uses high-quality shingles and materials that are tested to withstand high winds and impact from debris.

These materials are less likely to crack, tear, or dislodge under pressure.

  • Why It Matters:
Flying debris is a common hazard during hurricanes and severe storms. Standard shingles may crack or break on impact, exposing your roof deck to water and wind. Wind-resistant shingles and impact-resistant materials are designed to hold up under the toughest conditions.
  • The Result:
Your roof provides continuous protection, even when storms are at their worst.
  1. Certified Storm-Ready Design
Every Fortified Roof installed by a certified contractor is inspected and certified by IBHS to ensure it meets strict standards for storm resistance.

This certification provides homeowners with peace of mind, knowing their roof is ready to handle extreme weather.

  • Why It Matters:
Many roofs claim to be durable, but only a Fortified Roof is backed by third-party certification, guaranteeing it meets the highest standards for storm protection.
  • The Result:
Your home is as prepared as possible for hurricanes, high winds, and severe weather.

The Benefits of a Fortified Roof During Extreme Weather

  • Minimized Damage: Fortified Roofs are specifically designed to prevent water intrusion, wind uplift, and structural failure, protecting your home inside and out.
  • Cost Savings: By reducing the likelihood of storm damage, a Fortified Roof saves you money on emergency repairs and long-term maintenance.
  • Lower Insurance Premiums: Many insurance companies offer discounts for homes with Fortified Roofs, recognizing their reduced risk of damage.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing your roof is built to withstand extreme conditions provides unmatched confidence, especially during hurricane season.

Will Installing a Fortified Roof Lower My Homeowner's Insurance Premiums?

Yes, installing a Fortified Roof can lower your homeowner’s insurance premiums.

Insurance companies recognize that a home with a Fortified Roof is significantly less likely to sustain damage during extreme weather events.

This reduced risk makes you a more favorable policyholder, often translating into discounts on your premiums.

Beyond the savings, the real value comes from the peace of mind, knowing your home is better protected against hurricanes, high winds, and heavy rains.

Let’s explore how and why a Fortified Roof can lead to insurance savings.

Why Do Insurance Companies Offer Discounts for Fortified Roofs?

  1. Lower Risk of Claims
Insurance providers base premiums on the likelihood of claims.

Homes with standard roofs are more vulnerable to damage during storms, leading to costly claims for repairs or replacements.

A Fortified Roof, certified by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), significantly reduces the chance of:

  • Roof failure during high winds.
  • Water intrusion from heavy rain or missing shingles.
  • Damage to interior structures caused by leaks.

Since these risks are minimized, insurance companies reward homeowners with reduced premiums.

  1. Proven Protection
Fortified Roofs are tested and certified to withstand severe weather conditions, often surviving storms that would devastate standard roofing systems.

This certification assures insurers that the roof meets stringent standards, making your home a safer investment for them.

  1. Community Resilience Incentives
Some insurance companies and local governments promote Fortified Roofs as part of broader efforts to increase community resilience against natural disasters.

These initiatives often include financial incentives for homeowners who upgrade to storm-resistant roofs.

How Much Can You Save?

The exact discount varies depending on your location, insurance provider, and the level of Fortified Roof certification you achieve.

In hurricane-prone areas like North Carolina, savings can range from 10% to 25% or more on annual premiums.

Here are a few factors that influence the discount:

  • Level of Fortification: Fortified Roofs can be certified at different levels—Fortified Roof™, Fortified Silver™, and Fortified Gold™—with higher levels offering greater protection and potential savings.
  • Insurance Provider Policies: Some insurers offer tiered discounts based on the specific features of your Fortified Roof, such as a sealed roof deck or enhanced fastening systems.
  • State or Local Incentives: Certain states or regions may offer additional benefits or rebates for homeowners who install Fortified Roofs.

During your consultation, we’ll help you understand how a Fortified Roof might impact your insurance rates based on your specific circumstances.

Other Financial Benefits of a Fortified Roof

Beyond insurance savings, a Fortified Roof provides financial advantages that add to its value:

  1. Reduced Repair Costs
A Fortified Roof is built to last, even in the face of severe storms. By preventing damage like leaks, roof uplift, and water intrusion, it saves you thousands of dollars in potential repairs.
  2. Increased Home Value
Buyers are willing to pay more for homes with certified Fortified Roofs. This upgrade enhances your property’s appeal and value, making it a smart investment if you ever decide to sell.
  3. Lower Long-Term Maintenance
The enhanced durability of a Fortified Roof means fewer maintenance needs over time, keeping your costs lower and your roof in excellent condition for years to come.

How to Maximize Your Insurance Savings

To ensure you receive the maximum discount for your Fortified Roof, follow these steps:

  1. Work With a Certified Contractor
Insurance providers typically require proof that your roof meets IBHS standards.

As a certified Fortified Roof installer, Halo Roofing and Renovations ensures your roof is eligible for all available discounts.

  1. Obtain Certification
After your roof is installed, it will be inspected and certified by IBHS. This certification is your key to unlocking premium discounts.
  2. Share Certification With Your Insurer
Provide your insurance company with the IBHS certification to confirm your home’s improved storm resistance. This documentation helps them adjust your policy to reflect your reduced risk.
  3. Compare Providers
Not all insurers offer the same discounts for Fortified Roofs. Shop around to find the company that offers the best savings for your upgraded roof.

What Materials and Techniques Are Used in Fortified Roof Installations to Ensure Durability?

A Fortified Roof is more than just a roof—it’s a carefully designed system that incorporates advanced materials and techniques to withstand extreme weather.

Every component is chosen and installed with durability and storm resistance in mind, ensuring your home is protected from high winds, heavy rain, hail, and flying debris.

Let’s break down the key materials and techniques used in Fortified Roof installations and how they work together to create unmatched strength and reliability.

  1. High-Performance Shingles
The shingles used in Fortified Roof installations are designed to handle extreme conditions far better than standard roofing materials.

These shingles are tested to resist high wind speeds, typically up to 130 mph, and can endure the impacts of hail and flying debris without cracking or tearing.

  • Features of High-Performance Shingles:
    • Enhanced flexibility to withstand strong wind uplift.
    • Impact resistance to protect against hail damage.
    • UV resistance to prevent fading and wear over time.

These shingles provide the first line of defense, keeping the roof intact during even the toughest storms.

  1. Sealed Roof Deck
The sealed roof deck is one of the most critical components of a Fortified Roof.

Before shingles are installed, the roof deck is covered with a waterproof adhesive underlayment or specialized sealing tape.

This creates a barrier that prevents water from entering your home, even if shingles are blown away during a storm.

  • Why It’s Important:
    • Traditional roofs allow water to seep through gaps in the deck if shingles are lost.
    • A sealed roof deck stops leaks before they start, protecting your ceilings, walls, and belongings.

With a sealed roof deck, your home stays dry and protected, no matter how severe the storm.

  1. Enhanced Fastening Systems
The fasteners used in Fortified Roofs are stronger and more secure than those in standard roofs. Instead of smooth nails,

Fortified Roofs use ring-shank nails, which have a ridged design that provides extra grip. These fasteners are driven deeper into the roof deck to ensure they stay in place during high winds.

  • Benefits of Enhanced Fasteners:
    • Stronger hold to prevent shingles from lifting or flying off.
    • Increased resistance to wind pressure and vibrations.

This technique helps keep the entire roofing system firmly attached, even during hurricane-force winds.

  1. Reinforced Roof Edges
The edges of a roof are especially vulnerable to wind damage. Fortified Roofs address this weak point by reinforcing the roof edges with stronger materials and secure installation techniques.

This includes:

  • Metal drip edges that provide extra stability.
  • Specialized adhesives or fasteners to prevent edge lift.

Reinforcing the edges ensures the roof remains intact and water-resistant, even when subjected to powerful wind uplift.

  1. Durable Underlayment
The underlayment in a Fortified Roof is not your average felt paper. It’s a high-performance, waterproof barrier designed to protect the roof deck from moisture infiltration.
  • Advantages of Fortified Underlayment:
    • Acts as a secondary waterproof layer beneath the shingles.
    • Resists tearing or deterioration over time.
    • Adds an extra layer of protection in case of shingle loss.

This underlayment works hand-in-hand with the sealed roof deck to provide robust moisture protection.

  1. Impact-Resistant Materials
Flying debris is a major threat during hurricanes and severe storms.

Fortified Roofs use materials that can withstand impacts from branches, hail, and other debris without cracking or breaking.

  • Examples of Impact-Resistant Features:
    • Shingles with reinforced backing to absorb shock.
    • Metal components, such as drip edges and flashing, that resist dents and deformation.

These materials ensure your roof remains functional and secure, even after intense storms.

  1. Third-Party Certification
After installation, every Fortified Roof is inspected and certified by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS)

This certification ensures that all materials and techniques meet strict standards for storm resistance.

  • Why Certification Matters:
    • Provides peace of mind that your roof is ready for severe weather.
    • Qualifies you for potential homeowner’s insurance discounts.

How These Components Work Together

The true strength of a Fortified Roof lies in how these materials and techniques are combined into a cohesive system.

Each component is carefully selected and installed to address specific vulnerabilities, from water intrusion to wind uplift.

Together, they create a roof that not only meets but exceeds traditional building standards.

The Benefits of a Fortified Roof

  1. Superior Storm Protection: Keeps your home safe from wind, rain, hail, and debris.
  2. Increased Durability: Lasts longer and requires fewer repairs than standard roofs.
  3. Cost Savings: Reduces repair costs, lowers maintenance needs, and may qualify for insurance discounts.
  4. Peace of Mind: Provides confidence that your roof can withstand even the harshest weather conditions.

How Long Does It Take to Install a Fortified Roof, and What Is the Cost Compared to Traditional Roofing?

Installing a Fortified Roof is an investment in your home’s safety and resilience. While the installation process can take slightly longer than a traditional roof, the benefits far outweigh the time commitment.

The cost is also higher upfront, but the long-term savings on repairs, insurance premiums, and peace of mind make it a smart choice.

Let’s explore the timeline and costs associated with Fortified Roof installation and how it compares to standard roofing systems.

How Long Does It Take to Install a Fortified Roof?

The timeline for installing a Fortified Roof depends on several factors, including the size of your home, the existing roof’s condition, and the level of Fortified certification (Roof™, Silver™, or Gold™) you choose. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Initial Inspection and Planning
Before installation begins, we conduct a thorough inspection of your current roof to assess its condition and identify any repairs needed to meet Fortified standards.

This step typically takes 1-2 days and ensures your roof is ready for the upgrade.

  1. Removing the Old Roof
If your current roof needs to be replaced, removing the old shingles and preparing the roof deck takes 1-2 days for most homes.

Larger homes or those with extensive damage may take a bit longer.

  1. Installing the Fortified Roof System
The installation process includes several additional steps compared to a standard roof:
  • Sealing the Roof Deck: Applying a waterproof barrier to prevent water intrusion.
  • Reinforcing the Edges: Strengthening the roof’s perimeter to resist wind uplift.
  • Securing Fasteners and Shingles: Using advanced materials like ring-shank nails and wind-resistant shingles.

These steps ensure the roof meets the rigorous standards set by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS)

Depending on the home’s size and complexity, installation takes 3-5 days.

  1. Final Inspection and Certification
Once the roof is installed, it undergoes a final inspection to ensure it meets Fortified standards.

This process adds 1-2 days and is crucial for obtaining IBHS certification, which qualifies you for potential insurance discounts.

Total Timeline: For most homes, the entire process—inspection, removal, installation, and certification—takes 7-10 days.

How Much Does a Fortified Roof Cost?

The cost of a Fortified Roof depends on factors such as your roof’s size, the materials used, and the level of certification. On average, a Fortified Roof costs 20-30% more upfront than a traditional roof.

Here’s a closer look at the costs:

  1. Materials
Fortified Roofs use high-performance materials like wind-resistant shingles, waterproof underlayment, and reinforced fasteners.

These materials are more durable and effective but come with a higher price tag.

  • Traditional Roof Materials: $3 to $5 per square foot.
  • Fortified Roof Materials: $5 to $8 per square foot, depending on the certification level.
  1. Installation
The installation process for a Fortified Roof is more labor-intensive due to the additional steps required to meet IBHS standards.

While this increases upfront labor costs, it results in a stronger, longer-lasting roof.

  1. Certification and Long-Term Savings
IBHS certification adds a small cost but provides significant benefits, including:
  • Insurance Discounts: Many homeowners save 10-25% on premiums, which adds up over time.
  • Fewer Repairs: Fortified Roofs are less likely to sustain storm damage, reducing repair costs.

Typical Costs: For a 2,000-square-foot home, the cost of a Fortified Roof might range from $12,000 to $16,000, compared to $10,000 to $12,000 for a traditional roof.

Why Is the Investment Worth It?

While the upfront cost is higher, a Fortified Roof provides value in several ways:

  1. Long-Term Durability
A Fortified Roof is designed to withstand extreme weather, reducing the likelihood of costly repairs or premature replacement.
  2. Insurance Savings
Many homeowners recoup the higher upfront cost through lower insurance premiums, saving hundreds—or even thousands—over the roof’s lifespan.
  3. Peace of Mind
Knowing your home is protected from hurricanes, high winds, and heavy rain is priceless.
  4. Increased Home Value
Fortified Roofs enhance your home’s marketability, appealing to buyers who value durability and safety.
